They say that purple is the color of royalty. I was thinking about that the other day when two visions collided in my brain. I had posted on the Facebook fan page a few weeks ago about a topic that jumped into my head one day, The Power of Purple Prayers. The connection between the powerful and royal color of purple and God. What can our love of purple, the history it has to royalty and the power of such a powerful color teach us about God? Actually, a great deal.
I’m already sharing a series of articles on “Too Much Purple?” Here is my first installment where I talk about how our purple passion might be too much for our family. I’ll be sharing how our purple passion might turn into an obsession and crowd out other things including Jesus.
So in this series, The Power of Purple Prayers, I’d like to start off with the royal nature of purple and share a bit from the Bible about Lydia the seller of purple.
Lydia’s story is found in Acts 16:13-15, 40:
“And on the sabbath we went out of the city by a river side, where prayer was wont to be made; and we sat down, and spake unto the women which resorted thither. And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul. And when she was baptized, and her household, she besought us, saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide there. And she constrained us.”
“And they went out of the prison, and entered into the house of Lydia: and when they had seen the brethren, they comforted them, and departed.”
